Assistive Technology
What is Assistive Technology?
Assistive Technology or AT usually refers to items or equipment that help persons with disabilities improve their capabilities. Whether this is in the form of cranes or computer software, AT helps in everyday activities, particularly in three areas:
• Independent living: AT such as wheelchairs, ramps and ambulatory aids enables users to lead independent lives, without assistance from other individuals.
• Alternative and Augmentative Communication (AAC): AT in AAC helps a person with difficulty communicating in getting his message or idea across to others, as well as for others to relate a message or idea to him.
• Information technology: AT in computer and computer-related accessories helps an individual with disability to make use of IT for study, work or leisurely purposes. This includes both hardware and software.
